How do I choose between Annie Sloan Satin Paint & Chalk Paint?
The simple answer is “that depends” … if you want a lovely satiny, smooth surface, then choose Satin Paint … if you are planning to distress, or do something more creative, then choose Chalk Paint.
Launched in 2022, the all new Annie Sloan Satin Paint range sits happily alongside its older and world-renowned sibling, Chalk Paint™.
What is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™?
As one of the world leading experts in paint and colour, Annie Sloan has developed paints that are not only fun to use, but easy too. Suitable for most surfaces with minimal or no prep, Chalk Paint® offers the ultimate in flexibility with colours that can be blended, mixed together, lightened or darkened.
Offering endless creative applications, Chalk Paint™ can be thickened or thinned, used as a wash or even a dye. Once dry, Chalk Paint can be sealed with clear Chalk Paint® Wax, Lacquer or Pearlescent Glaze.
What is Annie Sloan Satin Paint?
According to Annie, Satin Paint is the paint you need for interior wood and metal. For our creative furniture restoration community, the hard-wearing, soft-sheen Satin Paint provides an easy ‘one-step’ smooth decorative option for upcycling and painting wooden and metal furniture. It differs from Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ in that there is no need to apply Wax or Lacquer to protect and finish after painting.
Annie Sloan Satin Paint is formulated for interior use on wood and metal, and has two main purposes. Firstly, it’s been designed to be used in conjunction with Annie Sloan Wall Paint on skirting, architraves, doors and other busy areas of the home. Secondly, it’s been developed to offer a contemporary-looking “one-step” solution to painting wooden and metal furniture. There is no need to apply Chalk Paint Wax or Lacquer to Annie Sloan Satin Paint.
What are the benefits of using Satin Paint?
With a colour palette that perfectly complements the Chalk Paint and Wall Paint ranges from Annie Sloan, Satin Paint is the perfect choice for creating a beautifully curated space. It is also great for providing a subtle lift, with its light luminescent finish bouncing light around a space.
The slightly luminous finish of Satin Paint lies somewhere between a flat matte emulsion and high gloss paint, which is perfect for using on busy areas in the home. When you need a durable product that is a more contemporary look than gloss, satin is the ideal option.
It's one of the most common paint finishes used for kitchen cabinets, rails, trims, and stair banisters and balustrades and with its slightly reflective tone. It’s ideal for refreshing wooden window frames and doors as well as period features within older properties.
How to apply satin paint
When it comes to applying satin paint, the key to achieving best results is in the preparation. First, sand down or clean the surface, removing any flakes from previous paint.
All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from any dust, debris or oil-based contaminants before applying Annie Sloan Satin Paint. We advise using a water-based detergent such as sugar soap to thoroughly clean.
Thoroughly sand, clean and degrease any surfaces previously painted with gloss paint, wax or lacquer before using Annie Sloan Satin Paint. If you are painting a metal surface, we advise applying a specialist primer underneath Satin Paint.
Using a brush … Apply a reasonably thick coat of Annie Sloan Satin Paint using a high quality fine tipped synthetic bristled brush (eg Annie Sloan Flat Brushes). Apply the paint in one direction (i.e vertically) and then the other (i.e horizontally) using a cross-hatch technique to achieve the desired coverage. Avoid overworking the paint, as this will cause the paint to degrade. Full coverage should be achieved after 2 coats, although a third may be necessary if making a dramatic colour change.
Using a roller … Satin Paint can be applied using the Annie Sloan foam rollers to achieve a good finish with minimal stippling or “orange peel” appearance. Rollers will coat the surface with a thinner layer of paint than a brush would, therefore additional coats may be required to achieve full coverage.
If in doubt, use a higher quality flat brush for application.
